Short films from Sweden and UK amongst those to hit Park City in 2018
Sundance has announced the short films that will be showcased at the next edition of the renowned film festival, due to be held in Park City, Utah between January 18th and 28th 2018. 69 short films will be screening with categories for live action, animation and documentary.
The UK is well represented with five shorts screening in the International Narrative Category alone. These include Careful How You Go, a darkly comic triptych about malevolent women, which is the directorial debut of British actress Emerald Fennell. Also screening is Harry Lighton's Wren Boys, the tale of a priest who drives a boy to prison the day after Christmas, which recently had it's world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival.
Recently screened at Uppsala, Sweden's The Turk Shop (Dir. Bahar Pars) is a comedy about structural racism at the workplace while Portugal's Thursday Night (Dir.Gonçalo Almeida) has already proved popular at genre fests winning Almeida Best Director at this year's Fantastic Fest in Austin.
In the Animation Section the popular and multi-award winning The Burden (Dir.Niki Lindroth von Bahr, Sweden) will be screened while Estonian animator Chintis Lungdren will get a chance to show Manivald (Estonia / Croatia / Canada, pictured above) that follows the title character who is still living at home with his retired mother when, the day before his 33rd birthday, a hot young wolf named Toomas comes to fix their washing machine and a love triangle develops. Animations from Poland and the UK also appear.
In the Documentary section Switzerland will be represented by Intimity (Dir. Elodie Dermange) in which a woman bares her soul as she is showering, dressing and putting on her make-up. The Trader [Sovdagari] (Dir. Tamta Gabrichidze, Georgia) sees Gela sell secondhand clothes and household items in places where money is potatoes.
